Director: Rolly Cohen

Rolly Cohen is currently the Melton Director of the Board of Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago. For the past 13 years she was the Director of BJE Education, overseeing the Marshall Jewish Learning Center, a cutting-edge teacher center and the Center for Jewish Teacher Education that offers professional development for supplementary school educators. In 2004, she was instrumental in founding the BJE Makor Or Center that serves children and young adults with special needs. Rolly has taught religious school for over 27 years and has participated in the BJE/Supervisor Teacher Program, mentoring beginning teachers. A graduate of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning and the Melton Israel Seminar, she is also a Teacher Educator’s Institute Fellow with the Mandel Foundation and a recipient of the Faye and Haskell Lurie Award for Excellence in Teaching. Rolly earned her BS in Education and Fine arts from the University of Illinois, Champaign and her Masters of Arts in Jewish Professional Studies from Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies. Rolly received the BJE Rambam Award in 2011 for leadership, vision and immeasurable contributions to the quality of Jewish education in metropolitan Chicago.

Merle Tovian

Assistant Director: Merle Tovian

Merle Tovian, the Assistant Director of BJE Melton School is an accomplished and energetic educator with a solid history of achievement in both secular and Jewish studies. She held the position of Director of Continuing Education at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park from 2005-2012, taught at Beth El religious school and adult ed. classes from 1995 – 2014 and is currently a part-time tutor at Huntington Learning Center in HP. She has extensive experience in observation of both students and teachers and evaluation/assessment. Her education includes: Certificate of Adult Education: Judaic Studies, Spertus Institute of Judaica, 2015; Post BS of Health Studies, Mundelein College, Loyola University, 1999; Certificate of Jewish Studies, Women’s Teacher Institute, 1996;
Bachelor of Science: Education, University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign 1974.
