From Jillian Fine (Director in Sydney, Australia)
I have spent a lot of time thinking how to grow the Melton School in Sydney, a city saturated with all forms of adult Jewish Learning. Our academic year runs from the end of February until the beginning of December, so I decided to offer Beyond Borders: The History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict for a late May start.
This was done with the goal of getting some of these students to sign up for the core subjects at the beginning of August. The timing was crucial as it was imperative that Beyond Borders did not in any way compete with the core subjects.
Two evening classes and one morning class were offered at different venues, taught by experienced Melton facilitators and the well-regarded Head of History at one of the day schools. I promoted and advertised the course and the response was overwhelming! Not only do we have three classes running, there is such a buzz in the classes and I have already been asked about the core courses. I am sure that Beyond Borders will be a springboard for many into further Melton studies.
