JEWISH ANSWERS TO LIFE'S MOST
CHALLENGING QUESTIONS

with author Rabbi Dr. Morey Schwartz,
Melton International Director

When dealing with life's hardships and disappointments, when the suffering is overwhelming or the loss is devastating, many people ask themselves timeless questions like: Why do good people suffer? Why is there so much evil in the world? Is everything that is happening pre-ordained? Can't God make a miracle for me? Answers to these and other questions are explored through the eyes of rabbinic sages and modern thinkers.

During these unprecedented times, the focus on our Jewish values has become ever more heightened, e.g. Taking Care of Ourselves, Gemilut Chasadim (Acts of Loving Kindness), Balancing the Needs of the Individual vs. the Community. Through the use of online breakout groups and chavruta partner study, we will take a deeper dive into texts from Melton curricula to consider their relevance at this time. The final session will focus on the holiday of Shavuot and how its evolution highlights our ideas of ritual development and the experiences of Torah and exile.

May 14 - Longing For Jerusalem

In this session, we will take ourselves to Jerusalem, the city that Jews have placed at the center of their dreams for many centuries.  Going to very specific locations, we will explore the tension between Heavenly Jerusalem and the real, Earthly Jerusalem of 900,000 residents, how-bound right now, and yet, also imagining a better place.  We will consider the special standing of the city and its current realities, social and political, as we approach Jerusalem Day, marking 53 years since the Six Day War.

May 21 - A Visit to the Jerusalem of Sefarad: Toledo

This session will take us to the remarkable city that served as the political and religious center of Spain for centuries, and hosted one of the great Jewish communities of the Diaspora.  As we wander through its alleys and "enter" the magnificent El Transity synagogue, we will meet with the wealthy and wise, the writers and simple folk, who made up that community that became known as "the Jerusalem of Sefarad", the heart of Jewish Spain.

Two Thursdays: May 14 and May 21

9 a.m. Pacific, 10 a.m. Mountain, 11 a.m. Central, Noon Eastern, 6 p.m. South Africa
